Winner of TFI New Labels Competition: FAREN

This past week-end, four of Canada's hottest young Designers showed their best at the 2009 Annual TFI New Labels Competition. As part of the ELLE Show, this year's gala drew a crowd of over 600 Fashionable supporters.

The 4 Designers: Cheryl Gushue, Jody Leigh, Sonja den Elzen and Faren Tami brought their creativity, innovation and savoir faire to the Runway with the legendary Carlu buzzing with excitement.
After a difficult deliberation by noteworthy competition judges - Nathalie Atkinson (Style & Culture columnist National post), David Dixon (Designer, David Dixon Inc.), Teresa Isabella (Design Director, Bluenotes), Peter Papapetrou (Stylish & Fashion Director, Lush magazine) and Rita Silvan (Editor-in-chief, ELLE Canada), a winner emerged from the pack.

With her dramatic collection inspired by the futuristic aesthetic of eco-friendly architecture, Faren Tami of Faren was crowned the winner of the ELLE Canada New Labels Fashion Award 2009, a Grand Prize package valued at $25,000!

After seeing all 4 collections, I clearly had my mind set on Thieves for her clean lines and originality, making knitwear look chic.

Faren won me over with the intricacy of her details, the cohesiveness of her looks and the futuristic avant-garde approach she injected in everyone of her designs.

Jody Leigh had something going on for her too, with her 40’s inspired aviator chic look, very well executed, although her pieces may have been just too predictable.
Cheryl Gushue's swimwear collection didn't inspire that much...I stopped taking pictures throughout the show, it wasn't good enough, no wave and pretty deja vu. I am sure there is a good reason why she was selected as one of the 4 Designers to compete, her website proves it, but the splash didn't make it to the runway.

In the end, I was very glad to see Faren crowned as the winner of the 2009 Annual TFI New Labels Competition. She certainly represents the Future of Canada’s avant-garde fashion.

I foresee a promising future for these designers, in the Canadian Fashion market, and why not on the international scene.

Well done !
